So I’ve been making hoodies for about ten months now. Non-stop hoodie-making for super awesome Bronies and Avatar fans who have been nothing but awesome to me and have left me wonderful reviews and who have encouraged me to keep doing what I love. Of the Avatar/Brony fanbase, I can think of only one customer that absolutely despises me, and that happens in business. It just does. Other than that, I’ve been lucky and have seen a wonderful side of the internet community! Generally I log onto my social networking sites and am excited to talk to my supporters and friends and see what they have to say about my new products.
Last week I made these Portal hoodies for the gaming community. I freakin’ LOVE Portal. Always have, always will, and I have been thinking up these two designs, especially the Turret one, since Thanksgiving. Since it was a new target market, I decided to post it on Reddit to just let people know they exist and to show what I can do— heck! I’m proud of these designs and thought it was worth a try.And OH MY GOD I haven’t seen so much hate. Not only did they bash my hoodies, claiming they looked like crap, are poorly made and made out of cheap material (which I bet they’re all experts in the subject of sewing, right?), but I got a whole bunch of messages telling me I needed to get a life, that I’m stupid f**cking gamer girl, and that I should kill myself. Really? Really? Did me making some hoodies really deserve that?
I know I know— the internet is a mean nasty place. And I WAS ready for it— I know r/Gaming is the very definition of horrible. But it’s one thing to be ready for it and for it to actually happen— I’m so hurt right now. Like, I can’t even describe how it feels to be hit with such a blow. Now, was this because I’m a woman? Was it because these people know nothing about handmade and don’t understand the work it takes? Or was it simply because they had nothing better to do with their Tuesday afternoon than try to ruin some girls’ day? I’m not sure, truthfully.
Now, this doesn’t mean anything is going to change. Like, literally, nothing is going to change other than I might not make any more gaming hoodies. I’m still going to do what I love as long as people want my stuff! I, personally, love my Portal hoodies, and if I don’t sell a single one, so what? I had fun making the two I have here and other people can just deal with it :D
So I found this post through Folly, and I gotta say, those kids don’t know what they’re talking about. Looking through your site your work is impeccable. Very, VERY well done. There are tons of designs on there I’d love to have!
The gaming fandom is arguably the biggest fandom online, and therefore has the highest concentration of haters, so I guess it kinda comes with the territory. But don’t let it get you down! Keep busting out amazing work! Your gallery alone earned you a follow from me!
